”The main part of intellectual education is not the acquisition of facts but learning how to make facts live.”
-- Oliver Wendell Holmes
On the Augustana Campus of the University of Alberta, a group of offerings exist that we call Learning and Beyond. The purpose of the varied Learning and Beyond courses is to give students the opportunity to make connections between their theoretical studies and the world outside the walls of the University. By stepping beyond the classroom, students take the opportunity to experience their intellectual pursuits, analyzing, adapting, and adopting those theories that they find meaningful in larger contexts. This mode of learning helps students discover that knowledge is a living thing, a historical conversation in which those long dead or far away can share the wisdom of their lives, and students can determine the truth of that wisdom.
